Establishing Healthy Smiles Early
Early infant oral care sets the foundation for a lifetime of healthy teeth. At Great Grins for KIDS – Portland, we provide the education and guidance you need to protect your infant’s oral health and prevent issues that could persist into adulthood.

Pregnancy and Oral Health
Maintaining oral health during pregnancy is crucial, as harmful bacteria can transfer from mother to child. Pregnancy increases the risk of periodontal disease, which has been linked to premature birth and low birth weight. To protect yourself and your baby, brush and floss daily, visit your dentist regularly, maintain a healthy diet, and use ADA-approved toothpaste. Avoid sharing utensils, cups, or food with your infant if you have periodontal disease.

Your Child’s First Visit
The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends scheduling your infant’s first dental visit by age one or when their first tooth erupts, typically between six and eight months. At this visit, Dr. Fariba Mutschler will perform an exam and share tips for proper oral care. Creating a positive first experience is essential—calm, reassuring behavior and familiar items like toys can help make their visit enjoyable.

Preventing Baby Bottle Tooth Decay
Baby bottle tooth decay occurs when sugars in milk, formula, or juice create acids that erode teeth, causing cavities. To prevent this, avoid putting your baby to bed with anything but water in their bottle. Early prevention is key to avoiding long-term complications or surgical interventions.

Infant Oral Care Tips
Begin caring for your infant’s oral health by cleaning their gums twice a day with a clean, wet gauze pad. When teeth appear, switch to a soft-bristled toothbrush. Monitor and address thumb-sucking or pacifier habits early, and schedule regular dental visits for preventive care and risk assessments. Proactive care ensures your child’s oral health is on the right track from the start.
