Why Should Your Child Get a Dental Cleaning?
Maintaining dental hygiene is important to keep your child's teeth in good shape and protect them from unwanted damage, gum disease, tooth decay, enamel wear, cavities, or losing teeth entirely. Flossing and brushing at least twice a day, helps prevent buildup of plaque and bacteria. We in the business call this daily routine along with professional cleanings the practice of preventive dentistry.
When Should Your Child Get a Dental Cleaning?
The general consensus is that everyone should have a cleaning at least every six months to reinforce oral care at home. However well your child brushes and flosses, there may still be spots they miss, have trouble reaching, or are unable to clean quite as thoroughly. A professional cleaning allows Dr. Fariba Mutschler or Dr. Mark Mutschler to find areas in their mouth which may need extra attention or specific tools to get the job done.
What Happens During a Dental Exam?
Before the actual cleaning, we must first complete the dental exams and diagnostic services:
• | Dr. Fariba Mutschler or Dr. Mark Mutschler will go over your child's medical history with you and update it if need be. This can include information on heart issues, medications, or any other factors that may affect your child's health. |
• | Oral cancer examination and screening. |
• | Evaluation of the gum tissue (Ex- For bleeding, which is a sign of negligent flossing). |
• | Examination for any abnormalities in your child's bite, chewing and swallowing patterns. |
• | X-rays of their teeth to look for signs of tooth decay. |
• | Referral to specialists, if a specific orthodontic procedure is determined to be needed. |
Once preparations are finished, preventive services are next. This cleaning treatment may include:
• | Removing plaque and tartar.
|
• | Eliminating stains.
|
• | Application of fluoride.
|
• | Sealants.
|
• | Teeth polishing, including for any crowns and dental fillings. |
Lastly, Dr. Fariba Mutschler or Dr. Mark Mutschler will finish up the cleaning before reviewing the results, giving their seal of approval, and leaving you and your child with some educational advice:
• | Instructions on proper brushing and flossing. |
• | Nutritional counseling for a diet that’s less harmful to your teeth. |
• | Recommendations for when to schedule a follow-up appointment for future hygiene treatment, periodontal (gum) concerns or restorative choices. |
• | Evaluating how effective or in need of improving your home-care preventive dentistry is. |
Are Dental Cleanings Painful?
Those who practice good daily oral hygiene at home with correct brushing and flossing techniques usually experience no discomfort during a cleaning. However, patients who’ve neglected these tasks and practice poor dental habits are more likely to feel some jaw or gum discomfort or sensitivity during treatment. In such cases, as a topical anesthetic can be given before the procedure to ease any pain.
