Can Kids Helping Prepare Foods Make Them More Open to Trying Nutritious Options?

Posted on 6/22/2020 by Fariba Mutschler
Can Kids Helping Prepare Foods Make Them More Open to Trying Nutritious Options?Kids tend to be picky eaters overall, which can make their nutrition levels less than ideal. This can impact their overall health, and it can also impact their oral health. We see kids all the time who could use a little nutritional boost in the oral health department. One way that we have found that works to get kids a little more open to trying new foods is to ask them to help prepare the foods. When they work with the food and put their hands on it, they tend to eat more foods since the foods seem a little more approachable.

Preparing a Meal Can Make It More Inviting

By allowing a child to go through and work with items that before did not appeal to them can make them feel like they have the power to change their minds. If at one point in time, your child turned up their nose at something like a bell pepper, preparing it for an upcoming meal could change that. Many children are excited at the idea of cutting and cooking foods for themselves. They want the opportunity to try new things, but they need the right environment to do so. For many kids, this it that environment.
Ask your child to help you come up with the next week's menu. They can have one of their favorite meals in exchange for a meal they have never tried before, but they help prepare it. This often opens up their ideas in terms of what foods could be interesting to try, and gives them the power to help cook the food in a way that seems more pleasing to them.
If you want a few more ideas on how to help increase the nutrition in your child's diet, call our office. We have lots of pointers we have found over the years!
My daughter was a little nervous to have her dental work done but everyone in the office was super friendly and very reassuring and that helped her nervousness go away. Thanks for the excellent dental experience. ~ Lilyana G.
