Cleanings, Exams and X-rays Oregon City, OR
At Great Grins for KIDS - Oregon City, we specialize in pediatric dental care designed to help your child maintain a healthy and beautiful smile. The best way to achieve this goal is with preventive dentistry, namely: cleanings, exams, and x-rays.
The Importance of Pediatric Dentistry
We cannot stress enough the importance of pediatric dentistry. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that you schedule your child’s first visit by the time their first tooth erupts. The sooner they receive professional care, the less likely they are to develop oral health problems.
With preventive care, we can help your child avoid tooth decay and gum disease. Both of these problems can result in serious complications that affect their permanent teeth. Our goal is to establish a strong foundation of oral health that follows your child into adulthood.
With routine pediatric care, we can:
• |
Prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and other dental problems
|
• |
Prevent the need for costly and time-consuming restorative treatments
|
• |
Keep your child’s teeth white, clean, and beautiful
|
• |
Establish a healthy, beautiful smile that lasts a lifetime |
The goal of professional cleaning is to stifle the growth of plaque, the thin biofilm that constantly forms on our teeth. If plaque is allowed to build up, it will calcify into a substance known as tartar, which can only be removed during cleaning. Plaque and tartar contain the bacteria responsible for both tooth decay and gum disease.
During your child’s cleaning, our dental hygienist will use an ultrasonic scaler to remove plaque and tartar deposits from the surfaces of the teeth above and below the gumline. We will also floss their teeth, apply a varnish, and suggest fluoride treatment. Even with a good at-home routine, professional cleanings are an essential part of any child’s oral health.
Routine checkups also involve a comprehensive exam. During the exam, Dr. Fariba Mutschler will check your child’s teeth and gums for any signs of tooth decay, gum disease, and other dental problems. Routine exams allow us to catch potential problems before they develop into more complicated issues. If we do diagnose tooth decay or gum disease, we may recommend restorative treatment to get your child’s smile back on track!
X-rays
X-rays are a crucial diagnostic tool that is usually taken during your child’s routine exams. X-rays provide us with an in-depth view of your child’s teeth and supporting bone. The images captured during an X-ray may help us diagnose dental problems that are not visible to the naked eye. Minor instances of decay and hairline fractures are much easier to treat when they are caught early. We may even be able to reverse minute instances of decay with fluoride treatment.
These days, we utilize digital x-rays, which are much safer and more effective than traditional film ones. Digital x-rays emit much less radiation. They also produce images which can be enlarged or manipulated to diagnose even smaller instances of decay or damage!
