What is a Dental Emergency When It Comes to Your Child's Mouth?

What is a Dental Emergency When It Comes to Your Child's Mouth? As a parent, you may feel like everything that happens to your child is an emergency. However, some things are more pressing than others. Where your child's mouth is concerned, how do you know what qualifies as a true dental emergency? Here is some information to help you decide.

What is a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is a situation where your child has suffered significant damage to his or her tooth or soft tissue in the mouth, and where immediate attention is required in order to prevent further damage. For example, a tooth that has been knocked out would qualify as an emergency, whereas a minor toothache would not.

Other emergencies are major chips or cracks in the teeth, serious soft tissue injuries that may require suturing or other remedial steps, and a sudden toothache (especially if it is severe and/or accompanied by a fever or a warm spot).

What Should You Do?

If you think your child is suffering from an emergency, bring him or her to see us right away. It's better to be safe than sorry in situations like this, so never feel like you are making things seem worse than they are.

If your child has lost a tooth due to trauma, be sure to try to collect it and bring it with you. Try not to touch the root part of the tooth, and rinse it off with clean water. Put it in a container and put milk or water over it to keep the tissue moist.

Above all, do not panic if your child has a dental emergency. Do your best to come see us right away, and of course we want you to know that you are free to call and ask any questions if you are not sure whether a given situation is an emergency or not. We're here to help you!
My daughter was a little nervous to have her dental work done but everyone in the office was super friendly and very reassuring and that helped her nervousness go away. Thanks for the excellent dental experience. ~ Lilyana G.
