Helping Your Child When a Loose Tooth Comes Out

Posted on 5/27/2017 by Fariba Mutschler
A little girl with a loose tooth.
When your child has a loose tooth, it can be a time of excitement and nervousness for them. This is especially true if this is their first loose tooth. The moment when that tooth comes out should be one of fun and happiness.

It is a parent's job to make sure their child understands why baby teeth come out, and to keep this process healthy for them. Here are a few pointers if your child has his or her first tooth getting loose.

Be Excited for Your Child
You need to keep calm. Even if you are a bit squeamish around the sight of blood, you need to do your best to keep the situation light. Show your child that you are excited at this new advancement, and explain to them the meaning this new milestone has to you.

Don't worry if there is a slight bit of bleeding; it is to be expected. Instead, show your child how to rinse his or her mouth out properly. You can also teach them the importance of rinsing with a slightly salt water rinse to speed up healing. Show them how to brush the new area, and make the process easy on them.

If your child hasn't been to the dentist in the last six months, now is a good time to have them go in and get checked out. Then, the dentist can look at the area and talk to your child about how the adult teeth are going to come in. The relationship between your child and their dentist is an important one.

Make sure to do your best to keep that relationship strong and growing as your child grows. The more you emphasize that relationship now, the stronger it will be as they get older, too.

Please contact our office if you have any questions abut your child's oral health.
