Preparing for Your Child's Important Dental Milestones

Posted on 11/30/2016 by Fariba Mutschler
A little suffering from his first tooth.
As your child gets older, he will go through a variety of important milestones, including several that involve his teeth. When they arise, many parents feel unprepared and aren't sure exactly what to expect or what they can do to help their child.

While you can certainly call your pediatric dentist for assistance, this guide can help you to be prepared for a few of the most important dental milestones.

Your Toddlers First Tooth

Your child will usually start teething between four and six months old. While this is an exciting time, it can also be challenging, as erupting teeth can be painful for your baby's young gums.

Cold teething rings or washcloths could help with the teething process. By the time your child is three years old, he should have his full set of baby teeth.

Your Child's First Loose Tooth

When your child is 5-6 years old, he will probably lose his first tooth. This is a big step, as the permanent teeth will then start to emerge. By about 12 years old, the baby teeth should all be gone.

Your Teen's dental appliances

Many teens need braces or other dental appliances in order to fix dental issues, including an improper bite, overlapping teeth, and overcrowding. Most children will get their braces at either 12 or 13 years old, although it is recommended that kids visit the dentists for the first time by 7 years old.

Your Teen's Wisdom Teeth

The last major dental milestone that your child will go through is getting his wisdom teeth. This usually occurs from ages 17-25, and about 85% of people have these teeth extracted due to problems with impaction and other issues.

If your child is going through any of these milestones - or if any of them are on the horizon - it is important to book an appointment with your child's dentist.

Please contact us if you have any questions about your teen's oral health.
