Helping Your Child Get that Stubborn Loose Tooth Out

Posted on 7/20/2016 by Fariba Mutschler
A young boy suffering from a painful loose tooth.Your child has had a loose tooth for days - even weeks! All he wants is for it to fall out so that he can put it under his pillow, and it is extremely distracting.

He is wiggling it and pushing it with his tongue all day, but that stubborn tooth isn't budging.

Is there anything that you can do to get it out?

If you want to help, start by making sure your hands are clean. Before ever touching your child's tooth, it is important that your hands are washed thoroughly so that you don't get germs or bacteria in his mouth. Then, follow these simple tips:

•  Gently wiggle your child's tooth from right to left. You should use your index finger and thumb to rock the tooth back and forth several times.
•  After rocking it to the left and right, go the other way and rock the tooth forward and backwards. Repeat this step several times.
•  Use a piece of floss, and place it between the tooth and the area that is starting to separate away from the gums.
•  Pull up on the floss quickly in the direction that his tooth has already started to break apart from the gums.

These steps should help to work the tooth out of its position, and the end result should be a new tooth that your child can place under his pillow in the hopes of being visited by the dentist.

However, you need to make sure that you are only performing these steps on a baby tooth. If you have a permanent tooth that is loose or is starting to fall out, call your dentist right away for guidance.

If your child has a loose tooth, don't try anything silly. Following these steps will be the safest way to remove a stubborn loose tooth. Please contact us if you have any questions about loosing a tooth.
