![]() Oral Care Methods to TryThere are a few strategies out there that have been proven to help your baby to get through those difficult teething times. First, you can try massaging your baby's gums with a finger (after washing your hands, of course), or you can give your child a teething ring to bite on. Cold items are also good at relieving pain, so consider letting your child suck or chew on a cold washcloth, or place a cold spoon into his mouth onto the gums in order to further numb the area. Oral Care Methods to AvoidOne of the biggest trends in teething right now is amber teething necklaces. Proponents believe that these stones release a pain-relieving substance can be absorbed into the blood via the skin. However, researchers have found no scientific evidence to back up these claims; plus, the beads might pose a choking hazard. Additionally, some parents have used lidocaine to try and relieve their child's pain, but the topical anesthetic could be toxic to babies and young children, potentially leading to brain damage, seizures, or even death. Fortunately, once the tooth starts to erupt, it shouldn't be a long process. Your child's baby teeth should be through by the time he is about two years of age, ending your teething troubles. Remember that your child should be visiting the dentist starting around his first birthday. During these appointments, a pediatric dentist will be able to examine your child's newly erupted teeth, and he may also offer other helpful suggestions on how to make the teething process more comfortable for everyone involved.
