What Causes Cavitites?
Posted on 1/15/2016 by Fariba Mutschler
Cavities in teeth (dental decay) are caused by bacteria. This means that a cavity is an infectious disease. A cavity is made by bacteria eating the same food you do and turning that food into an acidic gooey paste called "Plaque" that will dissolve the enamel away over time and make a hole. We call a hole in tooth enamel a "Cavity". The infection of teeth by bacteria in the cavity is called “Caries” or “Dental Decay”.

Babies are born without teeth and without the bacteria that cause a cavity so you do not have to worry about their diet of sweet milk. The bacteria that grow in everyone’s mouth and gut come from food and saliva that babies are exposed to from birth. Some of these bacteria actually help you by making vitamins you need. Others do no damage and just hang around. Unfortunately, some bacterial infections damage our body. Dental infections can cause damage to our gums and our teeth so that our breath smells bad, our teeth look ugly or hurt badly, or even kill you if not treated!

Where do the bacteria that cause a cavity in teeth come from? Usually from their mother. Now, do not feel guilty about that fact, they have to get infected from someone, it might as well be their mom! What does this mean for mothers? They should do everything possible to keep their own teeth and gums clean and cavity-free so they do not infect their babies with the bad kind of bacteria. Pregnant mothers should see their dentist for advice on this.
